Installing a home EV charger in Belgium: price, steps and inspection

22/10/2026

Charging your electric car at home is more convenient and cheaper than at a public station. But a charger draws a lot of power for hours at a time, so it must be installed properly. Here are the steps and the points to check.

1. Choose the right power
Most home chargers deliver 7.4 kW on single-phase or 11 kW on three-phase. The usable power depends mainly on your grid connection (single- or three-phase, and the rating of the main breaker) and on what your car can accept. A charger more powerful than your connection allows brings no benefit.

2. Check the existing installation
Before you order a charger, an electrician checks the power available at the meter, the condition of the distribution board, room for a dedicated circuit and the distance between the board and the charger location. Depending on the situation, you may need a residual current protection suited to EV charging, a cable with a sufficient cross-section, or even a higher connection capacity from the grid operator.

3. Consider smart charging
A smart charger can share the available power with the rest of the house (so the main breaker does not trip) and charge preferably with your solar panels. It costs a little more but quickly pays for itself if you have solar panels.

4. Budget
As a rough guide, a charger usually costs between €500 and €1,500, and installation by an electrician between €800 and €1,500, depending on the distance, the type of cable and changes to the board. For a simple installation, the total is often between €1,200 and €2,500 including VAT and inspection. Only a quote after a site visit gives an exact price.

5. The mandatory inspection
A charger is a new circuit: the installation must be inspected by an approved body under the RGIE/AREI. The inspection usually costs around €150. Depending on the power, a notification to the grid operator (Sibelga, ORES, RESA or Fluvius) may also be required.

6. Incentives
For private individuals, the federal tax reduction for chargers no longer applies to expenses made after 31 August 2024. Regional incentives change regularly: check the current conditions on your region's website (Brussels, Wallonia or Flanders) before ordering. Self-employed people and companies are subject to different tax rules — ask your accountant.

In short
A good installation starts with a check of your connection and your distribution board. EPC Technixs assesses your installation, advises you on the right power, installs the charger and prepares it for the inspection. Request your free quote.
